I try to do this twice a day because I think it has great benefits for oral health.
What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic dental treatment that apparently dates back about 3,000 years. It basically involves swishing a small amount of oil in your mouth for a short time, then spitting it out. The idea is that the oil pulls out bacteria and other toxins that hide within your mouth.
What are the benefits of oil pulling?
- Oil pulling helps with the excretion of toxic heavy metals by saliva.
- Reduces inflammation and improves gum health.
- May help prevent cavities.
- Kills harmful bacteria in your mouth.
- Reduces tooth pain and general sensitivity in your mouth.
- Whitens teeth.
How to oil pull:
- Measure one tablespoon of oil, such as coconut, sesame or olive oil. I like to use coconut oil because of its many health benefits. I also add Thieves vitality essential oil, good for your oral health and makes the coconut oil taste better when swishing.
- Swish it around in your mouth for 15–20 minutes, being careful not to swallow any.
- Spit the oil into a trash can once you’re done. Avoid spitting it into the sink or toilet, as this can cause a buildup of oil, which may lead to clogging of your drains.
- Rinse your mouth well using water before eating or drinking anything.
Repeat these steps a few times per week or up to three times daily. You may also want to work your way up, starting with swishing for just 5 minutes and increasing the duration until you’re able to do it for a full 15–20 minutes.
